A Letter to My Teenage Self

A Letter to My Teenage Self

Dear young lady Mahlatse,

Life is really throwing a lot at you at such a young age. I know that your feel disregarded by your loved ones, but know that they too are struggling. You parents just lost what they have worked so hard for. The recession is affecting everyone, yet nobody has sat you down to discuss these changes with you. You’ve been ambushed with sudden changes. You are not being difficult, you’re going through a difficult time. You will overcome this time. Don’t worry too much about the family. They are going to get back on their feet.

Your future is already planned out

A lot of what you are concerned about will all fall into place. You are smart and resilient by nature. That is not a coincidence, it is by design. You will manage to finish school, graduate from a elite university that you desire, and go on to be a functioning member of society. Your future is truly in your hands. There will be what seems like limitations along the way as you grow up, but you’ve got this!

Let’s address your health. You are really doing well in school, considering how poor your health has been. You are so focused on school and God, and that will save you. You’re making great choices and I’m so proud of you. You finally realized that the best thing to do is to focus on self-development. The health problems that you have been having are related to anxiety and depression. You have no idea, but that isn’t your fault. It’s unfortunate, but not to worry because it’s not forever. This too will pass.

Mom will be alright, it gets better

Your relationship with mom has unfortunately been a tumultuous one. Mom has worked very hard to create the life you had. Perhaps she did focus much more on her career and you got lost in her balancing act. But she did it all as she saw fit at the time. She can no longer give you the same lifestyle, but now she has all the time for you. She supports your ambitions and will continue to be the one person that will always be there. Time was lost, but you’re catching up now.

As you grow into a young woman, you will rediscover your talents and realize your worth. You may be confused about your future prospects and if you’re making the right decisions. It’s okay to not have it all figured out. The truth is no one has everything figured out, even if they seem to. You have a long life ahead of you, so there’s no rush to get everything right. Life is an educational journey, there’s no destination. You are a bright young lady and your life is destined to be prosperous. Hang in there. I love you.
